Mother-in-Law’s, the premium kimchi brand known for its authentic take on traditional Korean fermentation, is launching a Seaweed & Napa Cabbage Kimchi, a limited-batch addition to its bestselling Reserve line.

Packed with essential iodine, natural Vitamin B12, ocean trace minerals, and sea vegetables, this release turns everyday kimchi into a true superfood. Pairing these nutrient-dense sea greens with live, gut-balancing probiotic cultures makes supporting digestive health effortless.

On the flavor side, adding seaweed layers a subtle ocean salinity and rich umami over Mother-in-Law’s signature fermented base, enhancing a recipe that already packs significantly more savory depth than standard commercial kimchis.

Since launching its original handcrafted House kimchi in 2009, Mother-in-Law’s has continued to honor founder Lauryn Chun’s family recipe and the Korean craft of son-mat (“hand-taste”). Staying true to these traditional roots, it remains one of the few packaged kimchis on the market made with beef bone broth and fish sauce, giving it a rich, savory depth of flavor.

The 16-ounce seaweed kimchi is rolling out this October in more than 200 Whole Foods Market stores across select U.S. regions.

“Kimchi is a seasonal food of the land, but Korean cooking also has a deep connection with the sea,” said Lauryn Chun, founder of Mother in Law’s. “With this seaweed batch, we’re bringing in another traditional Korean ingredient to add even more savory depth and nutritional power to our House Reserve without changing what makes the line so special: the whole leaves of napa cabbage, bone broth, fish sauce, patient fermentation, and the unique son-mat quality that comes from making each batch by hand.”

Korean Tradition Rooted in the Sea

Surrounded by water on three sides, the Korean Peninsula’s culinary traditions are deeply connected to the ocean. Seaweed is a versatile staple, used in everything from everyday roasted gim (‘dried seaweed sheets’) and broths to banchan (‘side dishes’). It’s a coastal heritage kept alive by the haenyeo, legendary women who still free-dive to harvest seaweed and shellfish by hand.

After childbirth, Korean mothers are traditionally served miyeok-guk, a warming seaweed soup. This dish is so closely associated with childbirth that Koreans eat it on birthdays to honor their mothers. Korean tradition holds that seaweed soup helps cleanse and restore new mothers, a timeless ritual rooted in nourishment and connection that Mother-in-Law’s honors with this newest release.

About Mother-in-Law’s

Mother-in-Law’s brings authentic Korean culinary traditions together with contemporary freshness, clean ingredients, and time-honored fermentation. Founded in 2009 by Lauryn Chun, the brand began with her vision for an elevated, handcrafted kimchi that could stand alongside fine fermented foods like wine and cheese. The original House kimchi, developed from a family recipe served at her mother’s California restaurant, remains the brand’s bestseller. In June 2026, Parade Magazine ranked Mother-in-Law’s as the number one kimchi in the US, praising its freshness, crunch, balance, and premium napa cabbage.
